Vidya Balan, who made her debut with “Parineeta”, always maintained the homely girl next door appearance in most of her films. Though she tried western costumes in “Heyy Babyy” her pithy Indian look could not be concealed. So is the case with her makeover for the film “Kismat Konnection”.

But unconventional director Vishal Bhardwaj changed all that in his forth coming film “Ishqiya”. Vidya looks earthy, bold and appears in a totally new avatar. She is cast opposite Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin Shah. She plays a role with negative shades and is filmed in scenes involving hot and passionate lip-locks.

Vishal Bharadwaj’s films “Omkara” and “Kaminey” have already demonstrated what powerful performances the director can extract from his actors. He did the same with Vidya Balan in “Ishqiya”.

Americans slowly turning towards Hinduism

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 10:26 AM

We Are All Hindus Now'--headlines the article in the upcoming edition of prestigious newsmagazine Newsweek, saying 'US Views on God and Life Are Turning Hindu'.

Written by its religion editor Lisa Miller, it says, '…recent poll data show that conceptually, at least, we are slowly becoming more like Hindus and less like traditional Christians in the ways we think about God, our selves, each other, and eternity.'

Commenting about the Newsweek viewpoint, Rajan Zed said that community was glad that rich philosophical thought of Hinduism was being recognized and accepted widely outside the Hindu circles.

The article quotes a religion professor at Boston University who has long framed the American propensity for 'the divine-deli-cafeteria religion' as 'very much in the spirit of Hinduism.'

It further says: 'So here is another way in which Americans are becoming more Hindu: 24 percent of Americans say they believe in reincarnation, according to a 2008 Harris poll. So agnostic are we about the ultimate fates of our bodies that we're burning them--like Hindus--after death. More than a third of Americans now choose cremation, according to the Cremation Association of North America.'

New Afghan law:no sex, no food for wife

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 10:22 AM

A new law in Afghanistan permits men who are Shia Muslims to deny food for their wives if she won’t satisfy his sexual longings. According to the Guardian, the law states:

"Tamkeen is the readiness of the wife to submit to her husband’s reasonable sexual enjoyment, and her prohibition from going out of the house, except in extreme circumstances, without her husband’s permission. If any of the above provisions are not followed by the wife she is considered disobedient."

In April, the international community balked at a draft of the law and the Afghani president, Hamad Karzai, said he would review it to make possible changes. The good news is that another awful provision—legalizing rape within marriages—was taken out.

But the U.S. charity, Human Rights Watch, discovered last week that the law permitting Shia husbands to basically force their wives to be sex slaves remained. The new law also gives guardianship of children exclusively to dads and grandpas, requires wives to get permission from their husbands to work, and allows rapists to avoid punishment if he pays the woman or girl he raped.
