Sallu's Wanted, a hit in single screens

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 3:51 PM

Bollywood actor Salman Khan's latest action movie Wanted didn't get favourable reviews from the critics but has done good business by earning about Rs 38 crore across the country in its first week.Surprisingly, it is the single screens where the movie has fared well compared to the multiplexes by generating 70 percent business."Till now, we had undermined the business contributed by the single screen theaters, but this film has made us realise that such theatres are still the bosses," said trade analyst Taran Adarsh.Said another trade analyst: "Single screen theaters have been historically known to cater to testosterone boosting movies - action dramas. Wanted is exactly that kind of film. Then you have the price of the tickets, approximately less than half that of multiplexes, with the advantage of watching it on a 70mm screen. Quite naturally, audiences will choose single screens over multiplexes," he added.Exhibitor Manoj Desai of Gaiety Cinemas, a multiplex, believes that with Wanted, single screens have finally shown their clout." Wanted has got the film industry and also the single screen cinemas out of the ICU. The film has got 100 percent collections till now and it is only going to get better," said Desai.Starring Salman in the lead, Wanted is a bone-cruncher about a guy who takes on a city filled with scum.

I'm shocked to see my comment: Nayanthara

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 3:50 PM

The Prabhu Deva-Nayanthara romance has been rocked by the choreographer-turned-director’s wife Ramlath’s emotional outburst in a Tamil dailyRamlath, in an explosive, hard-hitting interview, has lashed out at Nayan stating that the actress is having a live-in relationship with her husband. Claiming that Prabhu was a loving father to her two kids, an upset Ramlath said that she had warned Nayanthara not to mess around with her husband and even threatened to beat her up the next time they met! Some media reports also subsequently carried what they called Nayanthara’s response to Ramlath’s statements. However, when CT contacted Nayanthara, she said, “I don’t wish to talk anything on this matter. All I want to say is that I have never spoken to any Tamil or English newspaper. I’m shocked to see my comment, which is fabricated.” Nayanthara, the numero uno actress in Kollywood till recently, is a person who speaks her mind. But when she doesn’t want to, nothing can make her speak. It is a big blow for the actress who is already trying hard to survive in the numbers game. More than a year back, after the release of Billa, she was hot property and all the top stars wanted to be paired opposite her. But after her films started flopping and her alleged affair with Prabhu Deva was confirmed, Kollywood biggies have distanced themselves from her. Nayan, who is currently chilling in Tiruvalla in Kerala will be joining the unit of her Telugu film in Hyderabad by the weekend.

Deepal Shaw is back

Our B-town item gals are fast moving on. From being ‘IT’ babes, to wannabes, to actresses. Okay, they appear in tiny roles and in even tinier clothes, but c’mon, nowadays, less is more, anyways.Rakhi Sawant has moved on from being an item bomb to a tele-bahu for a very unreal reality show. And another hottie, Deepal Shaw, is turning towards serious cinema. Believe it or not – it’s true. Recently while doing a ‘seriously’ sexy exclusive photo-shoot for Zoom, the gal revealed that she wants to flaunt much more than her glamorous avatar. She means real business, dearies. Like real cinema. After memorable films like A Wednesday and Kalyug, she’s onto her next, Right Ya Wrong, where she plays a female cop with Sunny Deol and Irrfan Khan for company. All we can say is that you’re making the right moves, babe. Though in showbiz there is no right or wrong. You know that already, don’t ya?

I am not bothered: Nayantara

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 9:01 AM

Without mentioning the qualifications to criticise her, Nayantara said on Wednesday that no one was “eligible to take a dig at her” over her alleged affair with choreographer-filmmaker Prabhu Deva.

The actress was responding to remarks made by Prabhu Deva’s wife Ramlath that Nayantara’s relationship with her husband has affected her a lot.

Talking to a vernacular daily, Ramlath said her agony against Nayantara was so much so that she would hit her when she happened to see her in person. “I once talked to her over phone and requested to stay away from my husband. But she didn’t pay heed to my plea,” Ramlath said.

Reacting to this, Nayantara, who is currently in Kerala with her parents, said, “It’s my life. And I have every right to decide on it. I came to know about the comments made against me by Prabhu Deva’s wife. No one has the right or eligibility to criticise me,” she said.

Stating that her family members know about her very well, the actress said they support her a lot in all her decision. “Why should I bother about others?” she said.

Varudu Title Not Given Away

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 9:00 AM

This is a classic example that shows the lack of ethics in Telugu film industry. Generally when a title for a film is registered, it stays vaild for a year, after which it is for sale, can be used again.

The title Varudu was originally meant for Mahesh Babu's film. It was reportedly registered too, but the film started being delayed for various reasons and in the melee a year passed away and the title got expired. Here the title became popular despite all the odds and we kept reading statements in the media that it was not confirmed.

The story is that the filmmaker of Varudu was careless, took it for granted that the title is theirs as it became very popular and synonymous with Mahesh Babu. When Gunasekhar and Danayya noticed that it wasn't renewed they snatched it for Allu Arjun film. It was not given away. This goes to prove that for some people in this industry everything is business, and there is nothing called 'good will'

Yanthram’s blazing climax

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 8:59 AM

The shooting of Shankar’s ‘Yanthram’ is fast approaching its climax! Currently the team is busy in putting its heart and sweat into the making of the movie’s climax.

Being the significant part of the movie, the scene features a fire bursting out of a scientist’s laboratory. This is said to be only a 4-min scene, however an elaborate set has been erected in the city’s Prasad Studios.

The production team has specially flown down few Hollywood visual effects companies to supervise this fire scene. This expertise will decide as to how and where special effects would be applicable while editing later.

Now, did you know that this is something new and done for the firsttime in our Indian cinema? Well, this method was earlier followed by a famous American filmmaker George Lucas in several Hollywood flicks of his times. Shankar had recently highlighted the importance of special effects and graphics in movies.

A dedicated man he is, our Superstar has insisted on staying on the sets, to see the shooting; although he has no role to play in it.

Hmm, now if such interesting things are happening on the sets, one would be really thrilled to experience the happenings live! Right?

Tollywood Heroes scared about choppers now

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 8:52 AM

After the chopper crash in which former chief minister Y S Rajashekhara Reddy was killed on September 2, Telugu film producers, have become wary of hiring helicopters just for the sake of making the scene look `rich'.

A leading hero shooting for a film has bluntly asked the director to change a scene in which a helicopter was to be used. "The requestwas unusual because heroes generally would like to be seen getting into a helicopter or coming down in a film. The shocking incident in which YSR was killed has had an effect on everyone," a producer said.

Practically all big budget films in which some of the highest paid heroes act have at least one scene in which a helicopter is shown which only boosts the hero's image.

While producers like Aswani Dutt are now being extra cautious about the use of a helicopter, the Telugu Film Producers Council's joint secretary Natti Kumar told TOI that a general body meeting of the producers would be held soon in which producers would be asked to take the necessary precautions, if using the helicopter was a must.

"We in the film industry have got used to a helicopter being hired for films but if the chief minister's chopper itself crashed, we have been shaken out of our slumber to ensure that more precautions are taken," Natti Kumar said.

Tollywood's heroes cannot do with a helicopter at least hovering in the background. Prabhas made a grand entry in `Billa' emerging out of a helicopter and even Nitin tried to create an impact in a helicopter chase in `Drona'.

Chiranjeevi's `Indra', Balakrishna's `Seema Simham' and just about every other film in which a big hero acts, has a helicopter.

Another producer Tammareddy Bharadwaja pointed out that most often it is the cameramen who are at risk as it is they who have to travel in a helicopter to take aerial shots.

Chiru for Rosaiah, PRP MLAs for Jagan

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 8:52 AM

Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) seems to be more interested in the late chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s successorissue than the Congress! PRP chief Chiranjeevi's remarks in praise of Chief Minister K Rosaiah in Tirupati on Tuesday have ruffled a few feathers in the party.

Chiru met Rosaiah at the latter’s invitation and said he had all the qualities to be a successful Chief Minister. Perhaps, taking a cue from him, PRP spokesperson Vasireddy Padma hinted at a possible tieup with the Congress when she pointed out that there would be nothing wrong if the PRP supported the ruling party.

The twin statements kicked up a little storm as a section in the PRP are said to be eager to see YSR's son Jagan Mohan Reddy as the chief minister. They interpreted the statements as Chiru's support for Rosaiah.

A few PRP legislators, including Sobha Nagireddy, were "hurt" at Chiru's comments, sources said. Nirmal PRP MLA Mahender Reddy reportedly wants to make his displeasure known to the megastar in person.

Chiranjeevi Wants To Grab YSR Image

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 8:51 AM

Though it is still a debate, it must be said that the death of Y S Rajasekhar Reddy has left a vacuum among the Andhra Pradesh politics. More than the loss to the Congress party, many say that thestate has lot a powerful leader who had a lot of pull in the center.

Now, it is being said that megastar Chiranjeevi is trying to cash in on the absence of YS and he has been making his moves on those lines. For now, there is news that Chiru’s PRP might soon be joining hands with Y S Jagan who has been working hard to get his father’s chair.

If that happens then the feel is that Chiru’s glamour will then get a suitable credibility unlike the current condition. However, many say that though Chiru has got the star appeal, he can never match up to the magnanimity of YSR and it would take ages for that to happen.

Is "Mahathma" Concept Violent?

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 8:49 AM

Krishna Vamsi's latest movie and Srikanth's 100th movie Mahatma is all set to release on the 2nd of October 2009. Thae movie is based on Mahatma Gandhi and his principles. The trailers and the promos look like it is a very violent movie.

The story may be similar to Chiranjeevi's Shankar Dada Jindabad. But Shakar Dada is a soft movie with Chiranjeevi following Gandhi's principles after being a Dada who is almost comic in his actions. Did Krishna Vamsi pick up the same concept for his movie and made it violent? May be. But with the creative talent Krishna Vamsi has, lets hope that Mahatma will turn into a meaningful and sensible movie like Kadgam.
