News channels scaring people on floods

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 10:45 AM

The mushrooming of the television channels in the State are scaring people on anything and every thing. Be it suicides by farmers or acid attack on girls or net cafe scandals or cabaret dances, they have their own style of making it sensational and can even come up with special stories on the issues.Friday was one such issue when the news about heavy inflows to the Srisailam Reservoir broke. The officials said they were preparing to discharge over 11 lakh cusecs of water from Srisailam which will have to pass through Nagarjuna Sagar and Prakasam Barrage before joining the Bay.There were around 7 lakh cusecs of water in Sagar and 4 lakh cusecs in Prakasam Barrage. The channels have added this to the flood water expected to be discharged from Srisailam and started giving analysis and predictions on the impending threat. One wonders what the officials from the irrigation department at Nagarjuna Sagar and Prakasam Barrage were doing, when they hear this calculation. The officials have already started clearing the storage water from Sagar and Prakasam Barrage so as to accommodate and discharge the surplus water expected from Srisailam. The water from Srisailam would take more than 36 hours to reach Vijayawada by which time, the officials can discharge the water from Sagar and Barrage without much damage and danger. But then, sensation is what is required for the news channels and they have their own ways to creating it. No one questions them and no one screens them. They go on their own.The present situation is expected to cause evacuation of over a 1000 villages from Sagar to Diviseema in the down of river Krishna.

Corruption & negligence is the cause of havoc

Posted by SRINU GUNTURU | | Posted On at 10:45 AM

Some people say its nature's fury. But it is a clear evidence of sheer negligence and improper handling of the construction works of the river safety walls and project by the corrupted officers and engineers threatening lives of lakhs of innocent people. If the honesty persisted at any angle in the construction works held by at least some of the higher cadres, they would have taken at least the precautionary measures instead of offering the dirty excuses saying this is the first time ever worst floods. The floods will be worst only. They are not for enjoying the scenic flow of water. What these Chief Engineers and Project Directors doing when alert warnings have been issued? Even some of the gates of the Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar Dams have not opened properly which shows the mis-management.By Saturday afternoon, the first capital of Andhra state is likely to be under 15-20 feet of water, thus putting into grave peril the lives of over two lakhs people marooned or missing. Many were feared dead, but the state government threw up its hands in helplessness and said that they could start rescue operations only from Saturday morning.Along with Kurnool town, the pilgrim centre of Mantralayam bore the brunt of the flood fury on Friday with the overflowing Tungabhadra and Handri rivers inundating the two towns. “The situation is totally out of control. We will have to act decisively tomorrow to send helicopters with fuel and drop water and baby food. Otherwise, things can become very very bad. Most of the marooned people are without food or water for two days,” a senior state government official told TOI.Thus by Saturday afternoon, the inflow of Krishna water downstream from Srisailam reservoir to Nagarjunsagar dam and further down to Prakasam barrage is expected to flood Vijayawada town and parts of Krishna and Guntur districts. “By Saturday night, Prakasam barrage would have received 8-9 lakh cusecs of water, something unprecedented in recent history. The usual capacity of water received at the barrage is not more than 4-5 lakh cusecs,” one official said.Vijayawada residents are on tenterhooks in the wake of the devastation that the flood waters wreaked in Kurnool town on Friday. The state government on Friday night directed the Krishna district administration to evacuate if necessary with force the people from the low lying areas of Vijayawada town.Faced with the unprecedented flooding, the state government on Friday pleaded helplessness. “Inclement weather is hampering both dropping of food packets as well as rescuing the marooned people. This is perhaps the worst floods in the history of the state. We have summoned the help of the army, air force and the navy,” chief minister K Rosaiah told the media at a press conference on Friday evening. The CM decided to stay put at the Secretariat for the night to monitor the Kurnool situation.
