Roja's action not surprising

R.K. Roja’s resignation from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), amid her open overtures to jump into the Congress bandwagon, has evoked little reaction from both -- the Congress and the TDP circles for two reasons.

One, there is no ‘surprise element’ in this because neither Ms. Roja nor the Congress, to be specific even late Rajasekhara Reddy, made any secret of this. The other reason was ill timing of Ms. Roja defection. She wanted to switch over to the Congress when it was caught in the emotional outpourings and a virulent pro-Jagan campaign.

Apparently even Roja had no choice but to announce her resignation and cross over to the Congress, because she had already taken the issue to the point of no return by heaping charges at the TDP and breaking ranks with the party and its supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu.

This happened two days before YSR’s chopper crash. But, as she had taken a committed step, she apparently could not have any second thought on her decision and had to do what she did.

Though Ms. Roja appeared to be a prized catch for the Congress in the pre-aircrash stage, her shifting of loyalties neither worried the TDP nor elated the Congress camp in the changed political scenario post-YSR.
