We hear that Jothika, who wowed audiences with her performance as a deaf and mute girl in Mozhi, was one of the close contenders for the National Award for Best Actress. Noted Malayam director Sibi Malayil, one of the jury members at the 55th National Film Awards for 2007, told a news channel that Jothika was one of the front runners for her performance in Mozhi, along with Meera Jasmine for the Malayalam film Ore Kadal and Umashree for the Kannada film Gulabi Talkies. “She was in contention for the award till the last round, in which Umashree emerged triumphant,” he said. The Radha Mohan-directed Mozhi, which, interestingly, was produced by Prakash Raj (who has won the National Award for Best Actor), was one of Jothika’s big movies in Kollywood before she got married to actor Suriya.
