When Y Annapurna, the principal of Vani College in Mehdipatnam asked her students to stick to the college dress code of Salwar Kameez, little did she realize that her act will lead to a path of religious conflict? Before anyone could react, she had 300 strong crowd staging a dharna outside her college and shouting slogans against her acts on minorities. But Annapuna has an interesting take on this. She said the whole row was motivated by a few students who were scolded by her for coming late.
She said she did not make any remarks for or against the burqa. But a student Nadima Rehman says that “The principal’s attitude upset us and hence we decided to take help from our parents.’ Regarding the late coming the students said that they were getting delayed because of "Ramzan" and they had to offer namaz before coming to college. They said the college should not object to religious practices. “The college authorities blame us saying we are spending more time in the mosque than with books. This is objectionable,’’ a student added. The principal on her part maintains that she is the victim of a few conspirators who are whipping up religious sentiments unnecessarily.
